Humber Connected: What Really Grinds My Gears
(Originally broadcast February 14th, 2011)

Today’s production Humber Connected: What Really Grinds My Gears had pre-production beginning quite early. Jonis took his job as Producer quite seriously early on as he took Rob and Sean aside to discuss the script. Rob initially seemed worried about the large rap portion he’d have to do on-air. Sean seemed relieved he didn’t have to recite it.
There was a couple crew positions that needed to be moved around which resulted in Devin and Phil be on-air talent as well. The two ended up becoming the first talents to be using the green screen in our section’s studio productions.
As the Director for the production, Prab called a meeting early to let the crew know what’s necessary for the production in hopes to save time for a longer run-through. In a rare moment, the often off-the-wall Prab is an absolute professional assuring the crew a solid production. Luckily, this tight-knit group seem more like close friends than classmates which surely eased everyone’s nerves going into the show.
We almost ran into a serious issue with mics early on in the run-through. Both Jonis’ and Kayla’s production required more than the usual 2 lav-mic set-up. Eventually this was cleared as Phil and Devin became better acquainted with the green screen, and Sean and Rob continued running through what they could. It’s plainly obvious that this class has a natural chemistry with each other both on and off camera.
Other parts of the crew began to shine. Tyler on inscriber did one of the best jobs yet as far as graphics go for productions. Matt Cooke had shadowed A1 on the previous production, and seemed excited to try it himself. Joe ran from studio to sound booth making sure the new mic set-up would work properly. Cat seemed comfortable as the Floor Manager, while Jason rushed to make some last minute changes Jonis needed to the prompter.
Although the production had its communication errors here and there, it ended up being a learning experience for everyone. Prab began understanding the on-the-spot camera shot calling as Director when some confusion with the rundown occurred. After some camera issues involving prompter, the on-camera crew ended up getting through a majority of the production despite a commercial needing to be taken out for time’s sake.
Overall Humber Connected: What Really Grinds My Gears helped us as a class to understand how the real world productions won’t always be 100% scripted and that some on the fly changes will be needed. Our class never gave into the pressure and continued to keep on keeping on to finish the show. As the weeks go on, section 1’s shows are evolving and beginning to include a wider variety of techniques (green screen, multiple guests, talk show format).
