Humber Connected: What's That Snack!

The Premise:
The first original show of week 1 was Humber Connected: What’s That Snack? Produced by Johannah Wong and directed by Sam Watson. The show was a game show based on blindfolded taste-testing of chocolates, fruits and other foods. The system of the game was that whoever guesses the name of the food would either gain a point for a right answer or their opponent would gain a point as a result.
The Set-Up:
The set-up for the show included moving the desk and drawing the curtain to hide the remnants of the once larger desk. The goal of this staging is to have the contestants, Michael Dajnarowicz and Matthew Dupuis, at the tasting table while the host, Kevin Valor, has his own section of the platform to call the game. Setting up the food was also important to this program, so important in fact that they appointment free agent (floater) Bret Bateman as a food wrangler to keep the game going by placing food in front of- and in the hands of- the contestants. Suzanne Stevens was the AD and was in charge of all the timing of each segment and made sure that the scripted content did not go to light or too heavy.
The Controversy:
Throughout the rehearsal for the show, some issues arose that the director and producer team swiftly dealt with: one of the challengers used some choice language and parts of the dialogue was either cut out or sped through too rapidly. The director instructed the talent not to use such a wide vocabulary of words starting with the letter ‘F’ and the producer consulted the teleprompter and talent about the show’s cues.
Now that it is time for the show, the team starts the count in the control room to go live at precisely 2:15 PM EST. Bars are at exactly 2:14 PM and everyone is on the edge of their seats. The show commences and runs rather beautifully, coming across as more polished than the rehearsal and on pace for a great 15 minute program. A small musical change underneath the competition portion helped to enhance the mood in the periods between correct and incorrect answers as the contestants scratch their heads. Suddenly there is a scramble as two instances have changed the course of the show, a contestant once again –although in hushed tones- uttered a word you cannot say on TV and is heard by the director, producer and AD on the studio monitors. The following minute a block of dialogue disappears from the show’s read as the host attempts to find his place. The team regains composure and pushes forth to finish on-time and open BRTV 200 student productions with an original, technical and entertaining program.
