Humber Connected: Weekly Update!
(Originally broadcast February 8th, 2011)
Today's House Blogger was Andrew Doherty!
- 9:45 - Technical setup is scheduled to begin, The control room seems calm, perhaps this will set the mood for the entire production, or maybe it's the calm before the storm. We'll see. Rehearsals are set to start at
- 10:15 AM. - Students are getting into their positions, and getting all the technical details sorted out and in their place before the dry run through. Brandon the director is running around chatting with all the crew members making sure everything is in it's place.
- 9:54 - Things are starting to get loud in the control room. Judy is helping Josh Lubin get the shader properly set up, while the cameras are all shooting the Chip Chart. Karen is helping Joshi Sam who will be fulfilling the roll of Technical Director - which he observed in the last production to make sure he has a full understanding of the machine.
- 10:01 - Technical set-up is still going on The director is helping the camera's get their shots properly framed up, and Craig Irving is looking very dapper in his shirt and tie. Audio is getting all the levels set, and everything seems to be going swimmingly. Can we keep our heads above the water for this production? We shall soon find out!
- 10:10 - 5 Minutes until rehearsals are set to start , everyone seems to be calm and in ready including the director Brandon Lankar.
- 10:15 - The crew gathers in the studio for a group shot, and Brandon and James give the crew a brief rundown of the show. Brandon tells everyone that the show will be covering topics such as "condoms that don't work, donkeys from Russia and other hard hitting news." Brandon also makes the request that who ever is playing their I-Pod over the intercom system needs to cut it out. The only question from the crew comes from Josh Gordon who asks the director Brandon "What's a hem-way?" ...we're still not too sure about that one.
- 10:20 - Everyone is getting ready to rehearse, and Brandon is giving last-minute instructions to the camera operators before our first dry run through.
- 10:24 - Karen calls for "Quiet in the control room" and the rehearsal begins. You can hear Brandon calmly counting down with the introduction music in the background, and everything seems to be running well. Craig the host is saying all his lines fluently and professionally, and the graphics are appearing above his right shoulder according to plan. If it weren't for the fact that I'm sitting in the control room, I would think I was watching a real television show the way everything seems to be going. The assistant director can be heard counting everything down perfectly. Video games in urinals now? Who knew. Hilarious script from James Andrews.
- 10:29 - first hiccup in production. The program monitor switches between cameras once or twice while Craig doesn't seem to be aware. But Joshi quickly brings in the commercial as planned after a slight mishap.
- 10:32 - There seems to be some awkward tension between the on camera hosts. Not sure if this is planned or not, but it's amusing.
- 10:33 - Another slight hiccup from the video room, "blue" comes in a few seconds after it should have, but the on-camera talent plays it off well.
- 10:34 - The ending sequence and credits come rolling in. The credits a little faster than desired, but Karen is helping to fix that. All in all the run through seemed to go well, and hopefully all errors should be fixed by the time we roll and record.
- 10:35 - 10 Minutes until air time. The director instructs the guest to give longer answers for the run through, as the teleprompter is having a hard time following along with the unscripted answers coming from the guest.
- 10:37 - I ask the producer James Andrews for a comment how things are going, and he responds with the following inspirational quote: "Friends are like stars, you may not always see them but they're there."
- 10:38 - More instructions from the director Brandon to the teleprompter and to the floor director.
- 10:40 - Some last minute changes to the inscriber program. Credits are being changed from a credits roll to pages, so they can be controlled and timed by the Inscriber operator Kyle Gilmour
- 10:43 - Karen instructs everyone that 10:45 is a "rough time" that we go to air, and to make sure everything is ready before rolling & recording.
- 10:45 - Graphics are finished, and we're ready to go "Roll, Record and Confirm" comes from Brandon, and we're live. Bars and tone are on screen, and cut out at exactly the right time. Slate comes up on schedule. And back to black without any problems.
- 10:47 - The introductory video plays, and the title "Weekly Update" is displayed over top of the intro.
- 10:47 - Program monitor mixes to Craig on camera smoothly. Everyone in the control room looks very focused and on task. Not a single word is heard in the control room that doesn't come from Brandon or Yazden (the production assistant).
- 10:50 - The "Blue" Roll comes in, and an image of a urinal is accidentally pulled up on screen. Oops. It's taken off quickly after it's noticed.
- 10:51 - Ready Blue, Roll Blue. Jim Whyte's 10 shot bio is put on program monitor.
- 10:54 - The awkward tension on camera is definitely still there. And it's still hilarious. Seems to be intentional.
- 10:55 - Half a second of black on program....
- 10:56 - Craig signs off and the closing animation comes on screen. Kyle controls the credits manually at Brandon's command
- 10:57 - Brandon calls for mix to black, and confirms that the show was in fact "rolled and recorded"
- 10:58 - Roll and record confirmed, and clean-up commences.
